Clinical Social Worker Exam Format

As of March 2025, the ASWB Clinical exam is divided into two sections of 85 questions. Each section has a two-hour time limit. After completing the first section, you'll be prompted to submit your answers, which are then locked. You’ll then receive a scheduled 10-minute break, during which the testing clock is paused before moving on to the second section.

During the exam, you’ll navigate questions using Pearson VUE’s testing software, where you can:

Flag questions to return to later
Review and skip questions
Move forward or backward within a section
Change answers before submitting that section

LCSW Exam Day

ASWB recommends locating your Pearson VUE test center a few days before your exam and arriving at least 30 minutes early on test day. You’ll need to bring two forms of identification:

To become a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Alabama, an applicant must meet the following requirements at the time of application:

Must be at least 19 years of age.
Must be a United States citizen or, if not a citizen of the United States, you must be legally present in the United States with appropriate documentation from the federal government.
