This MANDATORY skill building weekend will take place, if you stay on track, during the second and third semesters of your program of study. Generally, the Saturday class will run from 10:00am until 4:00pm and on Sunday, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. It will be held at the College of Social Work, Florida State University, 296 Champions Way, Building C, Tallahassee, Florida. We are located inside of the football stadium (Doak Campbell Stadium). The classroom is Room 1703 on the 1st floor. Parking is located right out front of the college and will be free. There will be signs and people to greet you and get you to the right room.
The Tallahassee airport is small, and you will most likely have to take a connecting flight from Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, or Miami. You can easily get to your hotel by Lyft or Uber. There are several hotels near the stadium and many others not very far away. The hotels that are very close are:
- Hotel Indigo
- Residence Inn
- Aloft
- DoubleTree
- Hotel Duval
Please dress comfortably. It can sometimes be cold in the classroom so feel free to wear/bring what you need to feel good! You should come prepared to take notes.
Lunch will be provided on Saturday and breakfast will be provided on Sunday. To use less plastic, we ask that you please bring your own water bottles/tumblers that you can refill. There is no coffee available very close to the classroom so for those of you that need your morning coffee, we recommend stopping on the way to the Saturday morning class. If you have any special dietary restrictions/needs, please let your instructor know so possible accommodations can be discussed.
This weekend is a mandatory component of the groups and practice courses. We have found that it is vital to learn about the important concepts of these classes. If you cannot make it to this event, you will need to drop the course - please reach out to your instructor immediately if you know you have a conflict.
We recognize that traveling to the College of Social Work requires time, money, and energy and we appreciate everyone's efforts. This will provide you with uninterrupted, focused time to interact with your peers and instructors, learn the material, and reflect on yourself and your work. Students have also shared how much they enjoy being on campus and feeling even more connected to FSU and the CSW. We are looking forward to meeting you all and spending some time together!
