Many Bachelor’s Degrees a Good Fit With MSW

The students who pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from Florida State University's College of Social Work include individuals with undergraduate degrees in a broad range of fields, not just social work. In fact, FSU offers the Traditional program option specifically for those with undergraduate degrees outside of the area of social work.

For example, students with a bachelor degree in community development, are a good fit for this program. This field recognizes the importance of activists and professionals alike to enhance one's quality of life. Students who have learned to think critically about social, political, economic, historic and cultural factors shaping communities may be a natural fit for social work studies.

A desire to develop strategies, programs and policies that add value to people's lives is a real asset. In fact, community development majors may be better able to grasp social, political and economic factors that lead to growth and social progress.

Today's aging population means that a gerontology degree may be an advantage for prospective MSW students. Gerontology knowledge offers specific academic training to serve an expanding population of seniors that are crucial to understanding and solving today's social challenges. A degree in gerontology may provide perspectives on the aging individual in social, statistical, sociological, medical and professional terms that establish a firm foundation for serious scholarship on helping others.

Similarly, a student with a Bachelor of Arts or Science in criminal justice may be a strong candidate for FSU's College of Social Work. For students who may want to work in the criminal justice system, the correctional system or law enforcement, the FSU’s multifaceted social work studies may hold particular interest. Today's criminal justice system influences social and cultural issues, including applications of forensics, advocacy and legal philosophy, that determine social progress. Criminal Justice majors may demonstrate an understanding of pervasive problems that confront legal and law enforcement professionals.

Of course, a health and wellness undergraduate degree can also be a great complement to an online MSW. Drawing from studies of preventative health care, habits and behavioral and physical challenges in health, policy and communities, as well as facts about nutrition, health education and exercise, the health and wellness student can use multiple strategies to further study social outcomes and impact. Building a career in helping people can really benefit from an education in how to live a healthy lifestyle.

The College of Social Work welcomes all applicants who meet admissions criteria, whatever one's background, motivation and bachelor's education. Our faculty and staff are eager to connect with each student as an individual.
